I dunno.... I think someone like pthalo makes a good argument for a jazz
ethos with an idm aesthetic. I see his stuff as not being too different from
say... a milford graves record (and thats not that I see too many fans of
one neccesarilly embracing the other).

for the most part I agree with this.... for a lot of "electronica" (and
post-rock folks like tortoise, et al) I think the connection with jazz can
be purely cosmetic.
Then again you have tracks like As One's "amalia's mode" on (Planetary
Folklore). He borrows the aesthetic and makes something that I think feels
kinda authentic as "jazz". I'll agree that its usually the exception, not
the rule.
I think it's funny you mention Amon Tobin... his stuff is too
premeditated/calculated to feel like "jazz" but at the same time who
cares... when you attain that level of beat science it just doesnt matter
anymore.
