I would argue that jazz is fundamentally rhythmic. Based on that, and its sociological roots, it bears quite a bit of resemblance. But I think I know what you mean - One would hardly mistake Coleman Hawkins' "Body and Soul" for Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice". For me, the similarities are apparent immediately below the surface.
