I mean this in the nicest possible way...but sometimes you guys are such
dorks. <smirk>
It's music. It doesn't HAVE to be groundbreaking. It just has to make you
feel something. Music isn't always about standing tallest in the ivory tower
of intellectual sound sculptures.
That said, if you like complicated, head-oriented music because you can
think about it, more power to you...
I go back and forth. I love Tides because it's just a beautiful piece of
music. On the other hand, Autechre create sound that is intellectually
beautiful and can be admired from a different perspective. BoC are more
emotionally charged...Speedy J appeals to my adrenaline.
It's about mood, perspective and finding the good vibe. That's what attracts
me to a piece of music.

I'll second this, for the most part. I have and enjoy Tides, but I don't
think it's so amazing or groundbreaking or whatever some other people think.
And other than Tides, I haven't found much of Arovane's work very
interesting/captivating/etc.
For me, Tides is a nice downtempo, "other people will like it, too" kind of
release. Heck, my girlfriend likes it, and she doesn't like most of "that
IDM stuff."
On the other hand, I also don't think BoC are the great mystical holy grail
of music either. I respect them and all, and it does seem that they put
more effort into their work than your average twiddler, and it shows, and
that's very important. Still, they're just another couple of guys making
music.
Who isn't? I don't know. Autechre? Aphex? John Sinunu's butt cheeks? No
comment.
