True. This may sound a bit backwords, especially coming from an audiophile type like me... I had Skinny Puppy's Last Rights on cd for a while when I decided to pick it up on vinyl. Wow! What a difference! I had no idea all the detail I was missing on the cd version. The vinyl had much more "space" between sounds and much more clearly defined sounds. It is now a common practice of mine to buy the vinyl version, dump that into my computer, and press a cd from that. 99 times out of 100 it sounds a hell of a lot better than the cd. The only times I've found where the record doesn't sound better than the cd is when it is pressed just too hot and you get an unacceptable amount of sibilance. Once in a blue moon I'll find that the vinyl can't accurately reproduce the low end, as with Autechre's Anti-Ep. New topic: Picked up some new stuff this week: Phonem- The Mechanic Verses 2x12"- sounds to me sort of like an "underproduced" or demo version of Hydro Electric. Not as lush, not as mature sounding, but still quite good. I'm more impressed with this than some of his recent comp tracks (Bip Hop, Bliss Tech, Putting the Morr...) which tend to rely too heavily on rhythm while harmonic content takes the back seat. Surface 10- Vector Fable- Haujobb meets Bola? With some prog jazz/rock lead synth sounds ala Jan Hammer. Neat. Very listenable. I'm sure this will make heavy rotation in my car/ at my house. Richard Devine- Lipswitch- What was all the hype about? Doesn't sound like anything he hasn't done in the past. And upon reflection, all his remixes (Aphex, Slicker, East Flatbush, Phoenecia) all sound pretty identical to each other as well as to his original stuff. His style sounded really great a couple years ago, but too much of a good thing gets really old really fast. And where's all the basslines, melodies, harmonic content? Sounds like half a record where he just started with the rhythm tracks and didn't bother with completing the rest of the song. And I know this has been a topic lately, but why is this thing only 40 minutes long? And wasn't there an earlier version of this release with even fewer songs on it? Hate to say it, but this one goes in the "disappointment" column. Starfish Pool- Illusion of Move: Chapter Blue- I've only had a chance to listen to it once, but so far I'm liking it. Not quite as edgy or crunchy as his Prayers for the Dying (I think that's the title), but is more digestable. No 20 minute songs on this one. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
