Top 10 in no particular order:
1. Radiohead - Kid A
(It was a BIG suprise to me hearing this from these guys. I hope they
continue to go down this path...)
2. Kid606 - Down with the scene
(OK, the hype about this guy has put a few people on this list off, I
understand that, but really listen to this record. He moves from complete
nutter gabber to smooth soul/hip-hop, all the while keeping his glitchy
trademark.)
3. Matmos - The West
(I know this came out in '99, but.......I've just turned on to these guys,
and the first time I actually heard them play was live at Bottom of the Hill
in SF last September. Their live show was great, and this record is on of
the best stabs at accoustic interpretations that I've ever heard.)
4. Plaid - Trainer
(OK, I know that this material isn't "new" per se, but it's an incredible
frame of reference for I duo that has been a driving force in the UK IDM
movement......the record is a must have.)
5. Isotope 217 - Who stole the I walkman?
(Thrill Jockey constantly puts out music that defys catigorization, and with
this most recent release, the blending of Electronic/Accoustic in what I can
only call an 'experimental jazz' template is an testement of how really good
music can be.)
6. DJ Food - Kaleidoscope
(It took a few listens to this to really make me a convert, but once you
begin to disect what's really going on, the record is deep as fuck. It's
amazing how there's such consistancy to the over-all sound of the records,
while still managing to push the limits of production.)
7. Peace Orchestra - Peace Orchestra
(Peter Kruder does this solo project up as smooth and funky as his work with
Dorfmeister. It's a big sounding, down-tempo, lush, and is just waiting for
you to spark up a joint. The thing that really make this record stand out
from the "down-tempo" pack is it's use of drums, very crisp and jazzy, and
not fuzzed-out a la BOC.
8. Single Cell Orchestra - The Aim EP - 12"
(Miguel F. is in top form on this record. His trademark breaks and lush,
symphonic sounds are as timeless as ever. "Blessin' Beats" is an uplifting
track that brings in chilled out breaks, while "Days End" is pure head
music, pulling together some of the most incredible and complex harmonys
I've heard.)
9. Jega - Geometry
(This record was another
'new-to-my-world' find this year. This record spills over with deep, dubby,
funck glitch that's smoooth as it is weird. It's a nice equlibrium. Another
member of the new-electro blip camp.)
10. Pole - 3
(What can you say about this guy? The craziest, spaced out, new dub there is
out there. A must have......)
10 and 1/2. Zygote - untitled CDr
(OK, I don't know where this came from, but if you see this, get it
ASAP......not time to explain, but I'll put up mp3s when I can.)
