Funny that you should mention this, I was just thinking about this last
night, and on more than a few occasions before that. Electronic music as
soundtracks for reading comics is something I've been interested in for
a good while. I have a good-sized comics collection, Miller, Gaiman,
Morrison, Moore, Vachss and numerous others, and I've always tried to find
a good match in music for the books I'm reading. Morrison's ``Invisibles''
goes with almost everything. Miller's ``Sin City'' books needs something
moody yet somewhat industrial (with the exception of ``300'' which has a
very different ambience because of the greek legends and mythology).
Miller and Geof Darrow's ``Hard Boiled'' requires something twisted,
perhaps EBN's ``Telecommunications Breakdown''. Miller & Gibbon's ``Martha
Washington'' series, hmm... haven't thought of that for a while.
Just last night I went for my collection again and dug up Quinn &
Vigil's ``Faust'' series and listened to Autechre's ``EP7'' and ``LP5''
whilst reading them. I also contemplated taking out Rex Miller's
``Chaingang'' with some very aggressive music like Aphex Twin's ``Come To
Daddy'' or somesuch, but fell asleep before that.
In my mind, Gaiman's ``Sandman'' and ``Death'' have a very tight
coupling with the ``Artificial Intelligence'' series on Warp - I was very
much into Gaiman's work (and still am) when those albums came out.
The ``Hellraiser'' book series (and other adaptations and additions to
Barker's work) is a potpourri of different themes and feelings, so most
anything goes.
Currently the only series I'm following is Mike Carey & Peter Gross'
``Lucifer'' on DC Vertigo, and the most appropriate piece of music I've
experienced while reading the issues has been Aphelion's ``Zugzwang'' on
deFocus. I hope Miller's new series will start soon, it has been too long
since ``Hell and Back'' ended... no info even on Dark Horse's site.
I don't know if my selections correlate with the themes and feelings of
the comics I'm reading, but since it's a matter of taste anyway, I
wouldn't start feuding if someone disagreed with me. My taste in comics is
anyway as eclectic (and broad) as my taste in music.
As for books (novels etc.) and music, don't even get me started. Last
week I read Sterling's ``Zeitgeist'' from front to back in a few hours and
all the while listened Beumont Hannant's ``Texturology'' and ``Basic Data
Manipulation''. And for technical reading - well-produced British techno
like Ruskin, Polson, Ho and the like go very well with that.
IDM content? What IDM content?
Cheers,
