For me it normally goes something like this...
"what kind of music do you like"
"erm, erm... techno... sorta..."
"I don't like techno"
"no that's trance your thinking of..."
Which it usually is!
Never mind IDM, most people don't really even know what techno is and it's
been around long enough.
