Your guess on Aphex's motivations for pulling out is much the same as mine,
but I don't know that the analogy to Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) holds
much water here. I don't think the good Captain had much of a choice about
stopping when he did. His health was failing, as was his voice, and Ice
Cream For Crow found him a pale shadow of his former self-- it's almost sad
to hear him croaking away like that, even though the artistry was still
estimable. And anyway, Van Vliet's career couldn't have had any easily
definable peak. Rather, it has a deep and yawning trough, aka the
mid-seventies, bracketed by two periods of stellar output. He couldn't have
sunk to the level of Unconditionally Guaranteed again at any point in his
hypothetical later career-- at worst, he would have merely become irrelevant
(much like Pere Ubu and The Fall have, to a large degree). Oh well...
Cheers,
Matthew
