I guess i dont understand quite how pop music is defined, but as for where i live and in my situation (high school in southern california) idm is non existant. Ive always definrded pop music in my mind as music that sells over, like 20000 copies, or what ever most of my fellow high school students listen to (punk rock, alternative, metal, rap, r&b, dance) I can guarantee you that in my school of 3000 kids, not a single soul has ever heard of richard devine in his/her life, and maybe id be lucky if 2 or three people have heard of aphex twin or autechre. It really is not the greatest thing for me, because this list is the only place where i can discuss this music. I know that 'idm' is bigger in the uk than here, but by how much? I have no way of knowing. I think that one thing that might stop idm from ever being that big in my kind of popcentric area is its name: intelligentdancemusic whoever thought of the name pretty much dragged the chances of experimental techno ever being popular in the US into the street and shot it. not that i ever needed to say this but anything having to do with intelligence is almost always labled elitist (even though i dont possibly see how listeners of a kind of music can be elite, because all you have to do is listen to it to be a listener). Popular music in my area seems to be all about image, not really the music itself. Does idm, or any idm musicians, have an image? (remember im writing this almost completely uninformed about the state of idm overseas) I always thought this was a good thing, because the musician without a heavy image is always about the music, and that seems like the general state of idm. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
