They wrote the book *after* getting the #1 hit. Maybe they did have some
kind of design beforehand, but they admit that the book is more of an _ex
post facto_ analysis of what happened to them and how the system works than
it was a game plan for their own success. Half of what they say you should
do in The Manual they did not actually do themselves!
Anyway, the point of the book to me was more about the making of art in
general - the whole part about your own artistic integrity being a sham, and
about intentional originality itself being a sham, was brilliant to me and
oddly inspirational.
