They wrote the book *after* getting the #1 hit. Maybe they did have some kind of design beforehand, but they admit that the book is more of an _ex post facto_ analysis of what happened to them and how the system works than it was a game plan for their own success. Half of what they say you should do in The Manual they did not actually do themselves!
