The Cars didn't do anything worthwhile in the last 20 years, and the quality
of their stuff before that is highly debateable. But lots of top 40 hits,
especially dance music, from the 80's were pretty cool since back then
Britain allowed lots of not-so-famous acts to make the charts (Gary Numan,
the Pretenders, blah blah). And The Roots are cool, but they only scratch
the surface of the history of mainstream yet innovative hip hop. But hell
yeah for the KLF. Their presence in the top 40 was a fluke, however, and all
of you should read their book, the first half of which is an indispensible
bubble-burstin' essay on the nature of art and creativity in a irreparably
commercial world:
