I've said this before: if you can disregard the terrible name and somewhat icky cover (and if even I got over them, I'm sure y'all can - I'm the aesthete/snob par excellence) - track down Deepfried Toguma, "The Hi-Fi Companion." Here's the review I wrote for A.P.: Deepfried Toguma, The Hi-Fi Companion (Plasma) The name is dodgy and the cover art fleshily disturbing, but Deepfried Toguma's Hi-Fi Companion is one of those secret gems that you really can't afford to miss. These guys may be Danish, but Boards of Canada sets the overall tone here, with lush orchestration, detuned details and an almost subliminally nostalgic undertone presiding throughout. Minor key melodies, Middle Eastern sonorities and shuffling, downtempo beats combine to create a classic IDM sound, where stains of Black Dog, Luke Slater’s Seventh Plain and even Hab twine together, fusing a new shape for what might otherwise have been a retro exercise. On the standout tracks, resonant vocal loops add unfathomable emotional depth to tracks you thought bottomless to begin with. Really, a great complement to BoC. p
