I suppose I should weigh in on this since I wrote the IDM Ring introduction that's spawned so much debate. I'd definitely agree with the theory that IDM's a community. All the artists we discuss play off one another. Autechre names Mantronix, Stockhausen, and George Clinton as influences, so they're on-topic. Autechre, Squarepusher, and Luke Vibert remix DJ Food, bringing Ninja Tune into the fold. Coldcut mixes Plastikman with James Brown, Autechre adds a Chic sample to their Basscadet remix, the list goes on and on... I wouldn't try to put all these artists in the same genre, though. They all have very diverse sounds. If anything, they're just connected by some sort of post-modern funky vibe. That's what makes this list so cool.
