Michael Jackson was popular for a reason. He knew how to write very good pop music, and then millions of people threw money at him. But that first post was completely silly. In what way is Michael Jackson at all IDM? Relatedly, why do so many people constantly remind the IDM list at large to listen to music besides IDM? I don't know a single person into the big, ameoba-like, nebulous genre known as IDM who doesn't have pretty diverse tastes in music. Just because people try to keep the list conversation vaguely topical doesn't mean that the bright and glorious past of unrelated music is somehow being dissed. It's one of those things I wonder about the list, every once in a while At 03:37 PM 6/29/00 -0500, Josh Davison wrote:

What about Bad? The title track was catchy. I guess the rest of it was pretty dumb, in hindsight. Related to that, I agree with a previous poster about the whole nouveau-80s thing.
