used IDM. . .not really. sometimes you can find a curiosity in the
markdown bins at Alien, but lately they seem to have conceded the
"left-field" market to 33 Degrees. which seems to work out fine, because
none of the guys at Alien really knew what they were selling with IDM in
the first place.
there's also Turntable records on either South 1st or South Lamar. . .it's
a strange little shop that exists primarily to serve up latin freestyle,
bootybass and whatnot, but i've found some really crazy stuff there (ex:
for no good reason they had at one point the entire C.I.A. catalog [Total
Science/Q Project]). again, i don't think they buy/sell IDM stuff, but i
don't know for sure.
then there's Sound Exchange. when i first got here in '93 they were the
absolute BEST place to go for IDM/ambient. unfortunately, the
dance/electronic buyer struck out to start his own shop (Innermind) which
tanked not long after it opened in 95 or so. i haven't been there in a
long while, but i know they deal in lots of used stuff so it might be worth
checking out.
And there is Tower on Guadalupe. there's a fairly respectable selection
there for meat-and-potatoes electronic stuff, but nothing to write home
about. excellent classical selection though. apparently it's the
weakest/smallest location of all of the Towers worldwide, and it shows.
between 33 Degrees and Waterloo i find a lot of nice stuff. 33 especially
has really come into it's own in the last year or so, and Waterloo is just
the coolest record store ever. Mel is the buyer at Waterloo and he is very
approachable with requests and suggestions. 33 has a nice little
indie-kid/post-rock vibe that is pretty damn chill.
hope this helps. . .i imagine that you were hoping for a "silver bullet"
suggestion, but there just isn't one in this town. but with 33 and
Waterloo i guess i can't really complain :)
