when i dj. i just play music.
i had the opportunity to dj before the funkstorung/lexaunculpt/kit
clayton show in chicago this summer. it was a blast.
and i was mixing autechre into peter, paul, and mary.
plone into jim orourke.
squarepusher into eric dolphy.
john cage into perrey and kingsley.
tortoise into steve reich.
oval into gamelan music.
hall n oates into aphex twin.
funkstorung into joao gilberto.
and it was wonderful. and all these connections happen between music
that people think is far removed from each other. but its all just good
music manifest in different forms and styles.
i kept the audience on their toes. they didnt know what was going to
come next. of course it wasnt really a dance situation, it was more of a
listening situation. but it didnt matter. i think michael fakesch called
me the weirdest dj that he had ever heard.
i use a combination of beat matching and sound collaging.
its obvious that a lot of us are music nerds on this list. and that we
have stupidly huge record collections.
i think people like us need to get out there and share all of this
wonderful obscure and rare music with everyone we can. instead of
sitting in our rooms and listening to it ourselves and being selfish
about our record collections.
who cares if you arent a great dj with lots of mixing and scratching
skills. get out there and do something creative with a dj set and play
good music.
we need to start getting IDM and other obscure and progressive musics
played in cafes and clubs and whatever. start up your own nite
somewhere, ask a club owner to dj, dj for free, dj on college radio
stations, you will be surprised with what will happen.
dj'ing is something i want to do more of, but my schooling doesnt allow
me enough time to pursue it right now. i think this whole "IDM scene" or
whatever you wanna call it, could benefit greatly from more sharing and
community and positivity and inclusiveness so we can have more
electronic music shows and places that we can go to hear the music we
like too. instead of all this negativity, and one upmanship, each person
for themselves and competition and slagging everything, mentality that
way too many "idm'ers" have.
sorry about the rant, but i get sick of all the slagging and flaming and
shit that gets tossed around on this list but i think you guys/gals know
what i mean.

btw, squarepusher's quality control has gone down but i still respect
what hes doing. he just needs to be more selective with what hes putting
out.
and the solvent CD is absolutely brilliant. its like a full length album
of bochum welt's best melodic and nostalgic electro tracks or RDJ's
earlier beautiful tracks. or an electro version of global goon.
one of the better records to come out in awhile
i will be dj'ing on new years in chicago, so who knows what track will
bring in the year 2000. should be interesting
