hey, it's more I than most IDM, although definitely less D. first, if you have record player (and you better), look for his early stuff used on vinyl. while copies of _hymnen_ may be few and far between, i've seen _gesang der junglinge_, _telemusik/mixtur_ and _kontake_ in the 5 to 6 dollar range used. which is better than buying from the ridiculously expensive stockhausen verlag - what is it, $120 for _hymnen_? christ! my personal recommendation would be to check out _telemusik/mixtur_. _telemusik_ does the early-electronic-bleep-crash-bloop thing pretty well, but with a nice continuity to it. _kontakte_ is good, but discontinous and a bit annoying. and _stimmung_ is an ordeal, if you ask me. if you REALLY want to delve into early electronic/concrete music, dig up the iannis xenakis _electronic music_ (aka _electro-acoustic music_) release - just amazing stuff, much more developed and interesting than stockhausen, IMO. i also heartily recommend tod dockstader ("water music" is almost sahko-like), rune lindblad, any of the compilations on Boit A Musique, and a couple of the Turnabout _Electronic Music_ compilations (I featuring mimaroglu, walter carlos, and an amazing thing by tzvi avni; III featuring cage, mimaroglu, and berio's "visage"). and then there's intersystems. but they're just weird. and if you see parmegiani's _creation du monde_ (is it?), it's worth it. amazingly prescient for it's time (early 80s? i think?). wow. this turned into a dissertation. sorry.
