could be an early 010400 gag? benjib www.tapirindustries.com -----Original Message----- From: The Black Dog [mailto:root@dogsquad.com] Sent: 30 March 2000 22:10 To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: (idm) MONKEY BUSINESS Dear IDM'ers, PLAID compilation on WARP : WITHOUT PREJUDICE ============================================= Recent postings on IDM have referred to an imminent "Plaid" Compilation on WARP RECORDS. As you may know, the original 10 EP's by The Black Dog, Balil, Plaid, Atypic (et al) were (c) Black Dog Productions Ltd, and released on the Black Dog Productions, GPR and Rising High labels. They built the foundations of The Black Dog sound and are "classic" examples of Intelligent Dance Music. I am very proud of them, and look back on the material as an influential and important part of The Black Dog past, created by the three of us. A time of magick. Many fans have asked if we'll ever re-release the material, but the three of us felt the material deserved to remain intact, on vinyl. However, to my *utter* dismay, I now read on IDM that Ed & Andy (Plaid) have authorised this material to be ripped apart from it's original format and track-listing, into a compilation album for release on Warp. If this is true, it's quite patently nothing more than a sad attept to cash-in on the loyalty of Black Dog fans, greed that is no doubt fuelled by a recent article on "rare Black Dog collectables" in Muzik Magazine. Why invest money and time into promoting new artists, when you can just cash in on the classics? Easier than writing new material, eh? This material is NOT supposed to be re-arranged in this way, it completely changes the meaning and spirit of the releases. You can't remove an ingredient from a recipe and expect it to taste the same! Different artwork, different track listings and different formats will result in a lack-lustre and sad attempt to squeeze more money out of fans. It's not The Black Dog way. No attempt has been made by Warp to license this material from Black Dog Productions Ltd. If this compliation sees the light of day I will personally consider legal action against them. Are Warp setting a precedent? Are they telling their artists "you can now release any material you have licensed in the past on another label, without our permission" ?!! If this compliation ever does hit the shelves, we recommend you hold on to your hard-earned cash. why? Because we will post the entire Black Dog Productions back catalogue, with the original track listings, on the Internet in the super-friendly, easy to download MP3 format. Then you can make your own compliation. FOR NOTHING. It will be a very happy day for us all, when we can say goodbye to wanky record corporations like W*rp and S*ny. Thanks for all your support over the years.
