It depends on the bandwidth you choose to encode it with. The
generally accepted standard is 128k 44khz stereo, which will give you
near-enough CD quality. Some people choose 112k. I think 176k is
standard CD audio bandwidth.
If you want to compromise, then a track will still sound reasonable in
56k 22khz stereo, although your listener needs a decent 16-bit sound
card otherwise it will sound a bit hissy. 56k is far from perfect, but
as a way of previewing tracks, it's ideal.
I've a P200 MMX and it usually takes me about 15 minutes to encode a 5
minute track at 128k/44khz/stereo. The only problem is, if I'm
encoding from CD to MP3 then I have to go through MSCDEX drivers,
which give clicky sound. If I encode an MP3 from another source, such
as tape or vinyl (routed into the line-in of my AWE64), then I get no
clicks at all.
