_The Instrumenalyst_ (or however that was spelled) is essentially an Automator album. Your appreciation of the Dr. Octagon album will depend on your ability or willingness to get inside the scat/pseudo-science/pseuo-medical sci-fi world Kool Keith raps about. Personally, I think both the production and rapping are great. I'm not sure how much this says about how far ahead of its time Ultramagnetic MCs' _Critical Beatdown_ was, and how much this says about the progress in hip-hop over the last decade or so -- but that's a record to check out for some mad beats (some of which do sound very '88) and even more mad scratching. --Mark
