MIKA VAINIO is one half of the ground-breaking PANASONIC (Blast First) and
the man behind the highly acclaimed sound sculptures of ?, released by
S?kho in Finland, one of the most influential labels of the early nineties
in pushing so-called Minimal Techno.
ONKO is Mika Vainio's first release under his own name. It marks a
departure from his previous work, more tranquil, symphonic even, but no
less intense in its exploration of the post-digital landscape and its quest
to reveal the grain of
the one/zero lifeform.
Imagine the sounds that cellular patterns might make as they face the
scrutiny of a high-powered microscope.
Or the soundtrack to a road movie, filmed in the Arctic Circle in high summer.
ONKO means 'It Is'.
In a category all on its own, a mystery to the marketing executives at the
Coca Cola bottling plant, at once 'ambient' only to ignite in a flash of
pure tone. An essential pleasure for anyone for whom the act of listening
is still first and foremost a creative activity.

ASH INTERNATIONAL
DECAY
Ash 3.9CD
THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN (things can only get worse)
DECAY is the final part of the triptych which began with Chiky(u)u (Ash
3.6) and continued with Scatter (Ash 3.5).
All the contributors are from Europe - a territory continually assaulted by
external and internal forces, many of which are still invisible.
The artists, all active, are from very different backgrounds and thrive in
very different scenes. German urban populist Panacea (Chrome/Mille
Plateau) alongside Spanish biological researcher Francisco Lopez (Tabel of
the Elements/trente oiseaux); Austrian guitar-sourced Christian Fennesz
(Mego) and Swedish-based art school punk Graham Lewis (Origin/ wir), for
example, reveal the variety and depth of experimentation.
The compilation also includes debut contributions from Florian Hecker (cf
forthcoming album on Mego), Anton Nikkil?, Shirt Trax and AER. Noto, from
the former East Germany, records for Raster Music and PUT PUT have
contributed to mesmervariations (Ash 1.8CD2)...
After four years and nearly forty releases this is the final release from
Ash International.
