I have the same issue with Venetian Snares. He's put out so much music, and it's always excellent, but if you've made 10 CDs worth of excellent Venetian Snares CDs, and you make an eleventh and it's basically the same thing again, I'm not as excited to hear it. If you make a perfect CD, do something different even if half your fan base doesn't like it, you're doing it right. As far as Squarepusher goes, "Music Is One Rotted Note" is a favorite, because it isn't a shiny drill-core record. It's a re-imagining of "In A Silent Way" era Miles Davis, only darker and rougher. That crappy spring reverb ambiance makes it sound like he's playing inside a closed box car. Compared to the standared SQP aesthetic, it's just wrong. And sometimes wrong is right.
