DiV played at Bimbo's last night, and even though I was feeling somewhat sick,
their album has been one of my favorites this year, so I made the trip to
check them out. I got there just a few minutes before they came on. As
someone's earlier CMJ review said, they had a full-time bassist and guitarist,
plus two guys on the keyboards/turntables/etc. I'm guessing the guy spinning
and pushing buttons was Richard, but it could have been the guitarist I
suppose.
They played a lot of their album tracks, but not the moody ambient tunes in
the latter part of the record, at least not as they were recorded. All the
songs were very beaty and funky, with their mix of scratchy guitars and big
beats. They played a few tracks I didn't recognize, despite owning all their
releases - like the first two tracks and the one played after Dirt. I'm hoping
they'll see the light of day soon. They added some sprinkles of new
sounds/melodies/noises into the songs that made me wish I'd brought something
to tape the show. A minor peeve was that the bass was a bit low on the mix
sometimes - like on Rekkit, whose bassline I think is the best bit of the
song, but at the show I could hardly hear it.
ObSelfIdentification: I was wearing a grey Underworld "begging for it" t-shirt.
Anyone else see the show? I was wondering how good the Aloof were when they
opened.
