Claude Young @ Voodoo, Liverpool, July 19th
My gawd! What a geezer! 3 hours of super hard crunching techno, rounded off
with some gorgeous acid tracks and played in a style that I can only
describe as pure hip hop. Incredible scratching and deck trickery, the kind
of stuff you rarely get in Voodoo's famously frenzied techno den. And
you've never heard a crowd go as mad as when he slipped in Jeff Mills' 'The
Bells', a track which is undoubtedly the club's anthem of 1997. I can
imagine sitting back in my rocking chair by the fire when I'm about 70,
sticking that track on and then drowning in tears of nostalgia for the
times we're living in.
Surgeon was on the bill too, but unfortunately he had to cancel due to
illness. Much to the dismay of the bloke who turned up wearing a full
operating gown, surgical mask and green wellies.
However, all this begs the question: has anyone got any views on Claude
Young's 'DJ Kicks' mix CD? I'd be interested to hear some opinions as I've
never heard it.
But anyway, if you get the chance to hear him play, take it.
Damon.
