Just got the new Drexciya 2-CD "The Quest" from Submerge's mail-order
service.
Three reasons to love Drexciya:
1. They have a really cool name. I mean, it looks cool. It sounds
cool. It's just plain cool. The kind of name you can recite and
feel good about.
2. The whole image is just brilliant... all those "water"
themes... Bubble Metropolis, Wave Jumpers, Hydro Cubes... And it
fits the music, too!
3. They balance cheese, humor and whimsy with serious mental music
gymnastics. And their sense of humor is really great. You gotta
love a track like "Aquabon" or "Take Your Mind". Contrast against
the grade school scatology of some of IDM's more well known
acts... (no names named, I'm in such a good mood today.)
So, "The Quest" is a classic, must-have slice of Drexciyan electro
aqua boogie. It compiles a bunch of stuff that was only out on vinyl
with a few exclusive unreleased tracks.
If you've never heard a Drexciya cut, first off, I pity you. But a
quick description of their sound goes something like this: fat 808
electro beats, mad squelchy "watery" synths, and some surprisingly
delicate melodic touches. In other words, the bastard child of
Kraftwerk and Underground Resistance.
Go out, get this, sign up to be a wave jumper and catch a wave.
(oh yeah, and a big thumbs up for the Submerge mail order service.
Prompt, courteous and efficient. use them.)
