I don't know about "idm beats", but I think the growing popularity of syncopation in pop/r&b stuff has a lot to do with Timbaland's productions. I don't really know where he gets his inspiration from, he always seems to dismiss any drum'n'bass influences despite the occasional similarities when people bring that up, but he's admitedly a big fan of Bjork and of course she's pretty well connected to the IDM scene.
