pop is all there really is to talk about. there's nothing going on except
politics in serious culture, and if you try to talk about underground
culture no one knows what you're on about. the beatles are more
likely to be remembered from this century than phil glass or autechre.
unfair maybe but that's the way it goes.
plus, there's a lot of really great art/literature around that just
consists of pop culture being manipulated into something entirely
different, for example mark leyner. knowledge of it really helps.
i agree about the whole ironic wishful thinking nostalgia deal that keeps
happening. people seem to think that treating something worthless as
though it had worth gives it some. it's just a trend, though, and it's
part because nothing original seems to be happening. so: plunder the
vaults. by 2005 there'll be 90's nostalgia.
