(idm) Jimi Tenor's IDM relevancy and other insignificant things

My point to the relevancy of Jimi Tenor discussion on IDM list is this: I guess as long as Jimi Tenor releases his stuff on Warp Records, I think there is some connection with this list. And what do you think about Red Snapper - should we ban the discussion on them too? Hardly purist IDM as some people would like to limit the discussion on here. And I think as long as Gentle People are on Rephlex, someone may discuss them in the context of this list. What about AFX and Mu-ziq's lounge obsessions then? (I just got "Urmur Bile Trax Vol. 1" and it was funny to spot those Kingsley & Perrey samples on 'Saabtone M5'.) As long as IDM stays as a "Warphlex" list, we have to accept the fact that the labels themselves may want to move on, and I'm glad Warp and Rephlex have been daring enough to widen their scopes though this seems hardly be the case with everyone here. Folks, there is not such thing as "pure" IDM anymore (if there ever was); it has been perverted and already gone beyond recognition by such things as drum & bass, hip hop, electro, trip hop, lounge, jazz and whatever. And I'm glad this is so. It should be mentioned that Jimi Tenor himself hates the moniker 'lounge'. If you want one indication that he is able to go beyond that genre (if he has ever been really part of that one at all), just listen the last track, 'Atlantis', on "Intervision". He has mentioned this may be the direction he will go towards next. I understand for most people on this list Jimi Tenor must be some happy-go-lucky wannabe newcomer, but here in Finland we've followed his career over a decade now ever since he started with his industrial band The Shamans (The Industrialists With A Clue (TM) posse of this list may want to get those JT & His Shamans albums in their hands), eventually got fed up with banging his head to the wall and turned to something different altogether - and this was in the early 90s before easy listening had become the trendy genre as it is now. Jimi has proved himself to be an innovative musician and artist who doesn't exactly follow where everyone else is going to, and continues to do so. If you don't like his music and person, fair enough; all I I want promote here is open-mindedness. And all that talk about "authenticity" and originality and saying Jimi's got nothing new in his music is just hair-splitting: every artist is influenced by someone else. In the age of sampling this question will only become even more absurd, and in defense of Mr. Tenor it can even be said that all his sounds are created by himself, and not stolen from someone else's records - if that wouldn't sound like the arguments of those techno-bashing, "playing music with real instruments", rock'n'roll people... Maybe we should start a new thread about authenticity and originality in IDM - I guess that would be more fruitful than constant slagging and flame wars. np: Tony Drake - Texture (this is an amazing album, how come I dind't discover this one before.) ekku the maintainer of pHinnWeb - everything u ever wanted to know about Finnish techno scene but were too afraid of the reindeer trerra@uta.fi | http://www.uta.fi/~trerra | http://www.sci.fi/~phinnweb
