I'm not saying that Prodigy fans are inferior, or that you're a
poseur if you haven't been listening to techno since birth, or that you
have to hide your secret past as an Allman Brothers, or anything like
that. I don't think that the 99% (99.99999%) of the people out there who
have never even heard of Derrick May are stupid or ignorant. I only
meant to point out that almost everything we talk about on this list is
still extremely esoteric compared to "what the kids are actually
listening to". And I think that this is a shame. Pointing out this fact
does not make me holier than thee - just realistic.
It's just that in the US, because of the dominance of corporate
media giants in controlling everything we see and hear, it's nearly
impossible to see or hear anything but a small selection of what's being
done in the arts. If you don't live in a major metropolitan area, you're
shit out of luck if you want to easily get access to a lot of great
music, art, performance, whatever. It's easier for MTV/radio to have 4
electronic bands which are all kinda good/mediocre rather than have
dozens of artists, lots of EPs , alter egos, remixes, etc to burden
their viewers with. This is not the kids fault.
