TRANSMAT- The label of labels. Derrick May's baby, and the blueprint of the IDM/Electronica sound we're so familiar with. My initial contact with Transmat was with 'strings of life', 'the beginning', 'move it', and of course 'nude photo'. I called up Record Time back in '93, and told them to ship me everything they had on the label that had anything to do with Rhythim is Rhythim, and they did! I love it. But the big surprise was getting Joey Beltram's 'energy flash'/'mentasm'(MS 16). What a shock! All these beautiful records by Derrick May, then comes this sinister 303 groove from Beltram! What the hell? And now Transmat(through the remarkable label New Electronica) are releasing their debut LP from Tony Drake(who had never even heard 'strings of life'!) called TEXTURE. I really think Transmat is on to something big! Hope some of this rambling has helped you, Gil. Oh, and don't forget the Fragile Records sublabel! Recommended TRANSMAT/FRAGILE listening: 'strings of life' 'move it' 'the beginning' 'nude photo' 'crackdown'(Psyche-Carl Craig) 'let's go'(X-Ray) 'salsa life' 'drama' 'the dance' 'energy flash'(Beltram) 'dreamworld'/'midi merge'(Outstanding FRG-3 from Orlando Voorn/very dark!) 'texture'(Tony Drake) And check out Detroit Escalator Co.'s "Soundtrack 313" album on Ferox, and the upcoming "Braille" album from Neil Oliverra, Derrick May's engineer at Transmat. Beautiful Stuff, so just light up a blunt & chill... Derek Jordan http://www.ccd.cccoes.edu/~djordan
