You've hit the nail on the head there, as far as I can tell. The majority of the general public are simply sheep, who follow the next big thing that they're told to like by magazines etc. It ends up with everyone wearing the same clothes (checked shirt phenomenon of last year fr'instance), listening to the same music (but not *really* listening) and going to the same nightclubs.
