i can't understand all this fanatical worship of orbital. they do little for me. there were maybe 2 worthwhile tracks on In Sides, in my opinion. Ben Morrison wrote:

i'll try to stay within the same general style... i mean, there were lots of styles of music i thought were better this year (techstep for one) but that wouldn't be much of a worthwhile comparison. the winner in the "friendly techno" stakes for me has to be the LP "Everest" by OFF AND GONE. this is everything that orbital should be - wants to be - but isn't. it's a big swirling hypnotic melting pot of beautiful noise underpinned by some great rhythms. where orbital beat a simple idea into the ground over the course of 10 or more minutes (did "out there somewhere" really need to be 20 minutes? i think not), off and gone pack so much creativity into 8 minutes that it feels like you just listened to an entire album. i get tired and antsy listening to orbital ("is this GOING somewhere? is something going to happen?"). i get energized and excited when i listen to off and gone. i can't remember if the underworld "2nd toughest" came out this year but if it did it certainly beats "in sides". if you can track down "anthology" by pentatonik, that is a VERY orbitalesque disc... i like it better though. see you in the future, -- Jon Drukman / jsd@gamespot.com
