Recently, *both* alternative stations here in Boston have added a techno track to their playlist. (I'm basing it on the fact that I've heard each song more than once on that station during normal play hours.) The songs stick out against the backdrop of REM and Lemonheads, but it's sure fun to hear them in the car. Surprisingly, the better of the two stations (IMHO) made the worse choice. WFNX, one of the first alternative stations in the country (started with this format in 1983 and has stuck with it), with a more classic alternative format (high variety of stuff, many different styles), chose to add The Prodigy's "Firestarter," which is, at best, really irritating, especially with the vocals. I much prefer the tracks on _Jilted_ to this song. WBCN, a more "rock"-y alternative station (more Gravity Kills, less Tori Amos) that recently switched over to this format and still plays an occasional Metallica song, added Orbital's "The Box," which is by far the top runner in my "least likely to leave my head any time soon once entered" award of 1996. Anyways, I like this. I think it's good that radio is taking a chance on this type of music. I hope it gets a posiitve enough response that they start branching out a little. -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwach parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry
