For more modern examples of horrendous noise records I can recommend V/Vm's
recent compilation AuralOffleWaffle... Which has a whole bunch of sandpaper
distortion filth noise scrape fests mixed in with pop hits, Agadoo, anyone?
Plus a track with the fabulous name 'A Song for Europe' Which only means
something to people who also know who Terry Wogan is, but still.
Also Speedranch and Jansky noise's mix CD Welcome to execrate is frankly
terrifying at times. Can't think why I like this stuff, but I can blame a
radio show called Difficult Listening on WMUA out of Amherst, MA for
introducing it to me. I started off not being able to get through 10-
minutes of the show, and soon found myself wanting more after it was over.
Is it extremist masochism? Or am I just reacting after 4 months driving
round America in a car with a girl who could only listen to Soul Hits
1950-1975.
Anyway I'm sure there are noise afficianados out there who know a lot more
about the modern scene than me. February in London sees Noise Girl and
Jansky Noise playing at the Garage. We shall see.
I'll also recommend the Split Series on FatCat - they've just put a CD out
with selected tracks from the first 8 sides, lots of different people
represented. Sides 19&20 came out on Monday, Kid606 and Christophe de
Babylon. Babylon goes for some serious jungle beats - very hardcore indeed.
The kid fits in some extremely intricate noise manipulations, multitextured
and full of depth.
Sorry for waffling on, this is just whats exciting me right now. Sorry also
if its all been discussed in the last few months, I've been off list for a
while (see aforementioned car journey).
