These things happen :-) I've read your review with great interest, at the same time wishing that I was capable of writing so intelligently about the music I hear and buy. Spooky 'Schmoo' [GRRR45] 1. original version 2. stripped down dub mix 3. steppin razor mix 4. underworld mix I got Schmoo a couple of months ago, paid a hefty price for it too. In all honesty, I got it for the Underworld (re)mixes as 'schmoo' itself reminds me too much of dutch tv adverts for telephone sex. 'oooh ahhh' and 'come to me' repeated threethousandmillion times ... (1) and (2) for obvious reasons don't differ much from the two versions on 'Gargantuan' (schmoo and schmoodub) in their ooh-ahh-ness. I really like (3) and (4) though ... the Underworld touch saves this 12" for me. The steppin razor mix gives us clanking sounds, Russian gibberish and distorted ooh-aah (in the beat). Underworld drive the 'old' Spooky motor extremely well ... Talking about Underworld: how come I rarely see anybody write about them on idm? Are they not intelligent enough (anymore)? Dubnobasswithmyheadman certainly threw my brain into another dimension ... oc> It's worth noting that Spooky have said that the initial oc> three EPs are limited edition (in that they're only going to oc> be pressed once, so once they're gone, they're gone), and oc> that Spooky considers them to constitute a set together. Buy oc> them now, while you still can. Got them already. I fully agree with you that Spooky deserves another chance. The new Spooky bears little resemblance to the old. Getting rid of the all pervading soul diva's was the best thing they ever did. It took me a while to get used to what I rather derogatorily called 'church music', i.e. the organsounds on Stereo, but once I put my bias out to pasture I fell for it. Still more 'dance' than 'brain' though, is what I thought as I danced my feet off when they played in Amsterdam last March. oc> chasing this stuff to ground. At _least_ buy _Found Sound_. oc> It needs to be heard by more people before it (and Spooky) oc> will get the recognition it's due. Got it last week, but as I've only played it once I'll have to reserve my final judgement for a later day. It's good music though - and rather beautiful. Helen -> The NEW Spooky's definitely worth a hype too OnNow: Spooky - Found Sound
