The moisture and bacteria play hell with the paper parts of the packaging. It is possible to carefully seal your music in heavy-weight plastic, but over the years the plastic wrapping can deteriorate, leaving your music open to damage, especially in damp or low-lying areas prone to flooding. You'll have more success burying CD's underground than LPs, as the LPs have more delicate surfaces, though no long term studies of burying CD's have been done. All in all, it's just simpler and more convenient to keep your music near your stereo setup, or in one of those nifty nylon cases if you choose to use a portable stereo.
