Well far be it from me to sneer at people who teach themselves, as being self taught means you come up with your own way of doing things. But you have to know SOMETHING -- you have to at least have some vocabulary common to the rest of the species with respect to the subject at hand. I marvel at the idea of a kid who made it through 18 years of school and home life without absorbing even the most fundamental concepts. Too much TV or something.
