Well it was an interesting night. I got there a few minutes before ten.
DJ Lewis was spinning but he wasn't as good as I had previously
remembered. I did like some of what he was playing but some of it
sounded so "this is rave music" to me. I remembered him playing more
obscure trippy stuff before and not such heavy driving trance. It all
sounded very German to me. Oh well I wasn't there to hear Lewis spin
anyway.
I think it was a little after 11 when LX and crew came on stage. They
started with that damn Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy thing. What a fucking
JOKE! I thought it was pretty lame. It wasn't even a real recording of
Ren & Stimpy which means that LX must've MADE it! HA! Anyway the real
music got off soon enough. They started with a melow track off Terranum
and then lead into an incredible version of Towers of Dub which sounded
like it went into a bit of Earth(Gia). It was fantastic and got me
rockin'. They played the Huge Evergrowing Remix and a very "live"
version of Outlands. I say "live" because very often it got very
progressive rock with the live drummer and bassist.
I imagined Pink Floyd on ecstasy (I hadn't taken any though). When the
backup guys got tired or whatever and left the stage to paint a crazy
stick man with a tongue, buck teeth, glasses and a penis on this massive
15 foot baloon, LX and the guy on the mixing console (where Thrash always
used to be _snif_) got into what sounded like that crazy version of
Assassin that's on Live93.
They played some bits of FFWD between songs but never totally got into a
FFWD track (I don't think). They played Little Fluffy Clouds in the
finale (if I remember correctly). I'm sorry about not being more
complete about the play list but I was in no mood to train spot. I
just wanted to focus on letting the music take me away which it did.
I bounced and hooted and jacked all night long. It wasn't all uptempo.
In fact it did not start pumpin and then wind down like others reported.
It sort of slid all over the place with nice long beatless ambient bits
in between. I even remember this wicked beat that came in for a few
measures but then dropped out to ambience and never came back which made
me feel as if there was a bit of improvisation in the play list. At
times I wondered if I was at the wrong show, esp. when it got VERY prog
rock and also when there was this crazy old 70's sounding commercial
disco track with a male vocal (WHA?)
All in all the music was intense and didn't back into a classified corner
(being ambient techno) and the lights were pretty cool with kaleidascopic
effects and morey patterns. The sound system was a HELL of a lot better
than the UFOrb tour. I even got back stage to have Alex sign some of my
WAU! Mr. Modo white label promo's.
It was a nice night out. Well worth the $20.
