I've seen him DJ a number of times in different contexts : chill out, dub, techno, experimental and he never ceases to surprise me, or fail to pick good records. I think he'll probably be more interesting that Mr Hawtin. On May 03.2004, at 15.49, Maximilien Lincourt wrote:

andrew is brilliant no matter what context he's playing in - and I've even heard him do a country/reggae set! tho for Mutek he probably wont be going that far out... i've seen hawtin as well - backstage at some festie at 5am twidling knobs - i prefer weatherall because he can go in any direction and although richie is brill 2 - there arent many surprises - ie might as well be at home listening to the album - whereas andrew avoids playing a lotta his own tracks. - unless its billed as a Two Lone Swordsmen gig - but then its usually not just him. x nh At 4:00 pm +0100 3/5/04, muffin wrote:

A while ago I would have agreed with you 100%, but the last time I saw Weatherall he bored me to tears. It was a fairly weak electro/breaks set that did absolutly nothing for me, every other time I've seen him has been fantastic though. I suppose that's a risk when you never play the same set twice. Hawtin on the other hand usually tours with a mostly predefined set of fairly similar techno, (a bit weird as he's one of the biggest advocates of Final Scratch which allows you to carry around a lot more records than you could otherwise, anyway........) which doesn't mean that he can a bit boring, especially if you've seen him a fair few times.

Well I've seen him about 5 times, and only one was bad, so you got about an 80% chance of it being fantantic :)

well, as it has been mentioned, you never really know for sure with this man. but with all the hubub over ROTTERS GOLF CLUB and the electro-tech revival/backlash/whatever, i think it's fair to say he'll be swatting electro-infused breaks and RGC-styled mayhem. roughcore darkness, people. weird, unorganized noise. good times? not my bag really. i saw him close for the plaid/p73 tour last year in SF. bimbo's was live and having it. and while it was quite the mashup -- god, i think he went through about 60+ records in 90 minutes w/on-point quick mixes -- the overall set was too monotonous. up, down, left, right. clockworky. as for his technique, i wouldn't knock it -- the man can flat out mix with the best of em. i just wish he would pick some groovers every now and again. it's ok to smash people over the head with some radioactive man every once in a while too ;) for advanced listening of a different kind, i would track down his BLOODSUGAR mixtape series. do it and some years to your life for christsakes. vols 1-7 are chocked full of deep, dubby, minimal house groovers from the glory days of FORCE TRACKS, BURIAL MIX, RAUM, etc. tight dancehall-tech for 2010. none of this "digital disco" shite. true. asg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

man i've known andrew for years but didnt know about the mixtape series. when andrew plays in this vein its most excellent - i've got a heavenly social mix tape from years back he did that i still play driving filled with deep dubby house - some even w/ vocals..it's classic. rotters isnt selling these are they? (i know what i'm gonna ask him 4 next time i see him... hehehe!) nH

Weatherall is to some legendary as a DJ. Like most 20 year veterans, technique is second nature and he focuses on mixing a musical set. I've seen quite a few people do that one. Was a very popular move with late 80's/early 90's rave DJs. For DJ tricks my favourite was always Claude Youngs trick of putting his record on top of a cotton reel, flipping the headshell upside down, and playing it backwards [in time].
