I'm looking for places that do online reviews of IDM / Electronic stuff. I've long gone to Pitchfork's reviews, and columns, by Philip Sherburne and Igloo Magazine (hey Pietro!), and The Wire of course. Are there other online sources you can recommend that cover IDM / Techno / Electro? Good question - I'm curious to see people's responses. Dusted has a similar purview to The Wire with maybe a little more rock/indie coverage. Some really good writers there. Tiny Mix Tapes was really good but they just pulled the plug. Fact Magazine fully pivoted to make videos for bedroom producers. Resident Advisor is maybe a little more techno and house focused. Bandcamp Daily does some good features but no reviews I don't think - this article <https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/an-introduction-to-extratone-the-worlds-fastest-music-genre> was fun. The Tone Glow newsletter has been great - also very Wire-like in its coverage although with an enthusiasm for pop music and other shit that makes me feel old like 100 Gecs. The period of my life where I've been super hungry to read about music has been winding down for a while so I'm not super on top of things. Maybe it's out there but so far I haven't found someone like Simon Reynolds or Geeta Dayal writing about new stuff. Adam Harper maybe? If there's any good critics out there worth checking out I'd love to know. On Thu, Aug 6, 2020 at 1:57 PM Stephen Ruiz <djstephenr@gmail.com> wrote:

This list can be a great source of information. It definitely featured some good music writing back in the day, and several people - including me - have gone on to writing criticism for pay. I'm mostly an enthusiastic dumbass on the list, but I've had my moments, and it got me a paying gig for Alternative Press when they still cared about electronic music. Which is a nudge to current list members to take the time to write something descriptive beyond just posting links to bandcamp. Low Company in the UK has been fun to follow. Really reminds me of SF's Aquarius Records - it's definitely flogging product but there's undeniable enthusiasm and importantly TASTE directing things. I miss Aquarius - I got turned onto so much stuff from them. I might've shared this guys writing before. Even though his prose is a little rough around the edges I love reading stuff like this: http://earthexit.blogspot.com/ On Thu, Aug 6, 2020 at 8:50 PM kent williams <chaircrusher@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks for this, i'll try to find some time to carefully Earthexit's much subjective prose ! He seems a little too arpeggio-forgiving, but someone who formalized rave music as «belgian brutalism» deserves respect ! Plus i didn't know Marusha committed «Rave Channel». Oops I just replied to Stephen. I'm partial to Joe Muggs' writing and not just because he said nice things about my music - though that was cool! His work for Bandcamp and The Guardian (and elsewhere, he's a scrambling freelancer) is always clear, lively writing and he is someone who bridges the fan/critic divide. I should also mention his son Alex did the artwork for my last release. Can't say enough for the Bandcamp editorial staff. They have a brief to help sell music, sure, but the writing is actually useful for consumers. I feel the same way about Boomkat.com -- they're flogging product, but once you get their point of view it's valuable information to help you decide whether you're going to like the music.
