I don't know if this is appropriate for the IDM list, but I saw that Larry Heard (the Chicago House god) had a new album out and wondered if anyone had heard it. It looked like it might have idm potential, certainly the tracks of his that I'm familiar with from the mid-80's were leaning in that direction. Goodness, I picked it up las t week and I am quite impressed with it. Although the cost was a steep 20 bucks, and its not even a doublepack (!!), I think it is quite worth it. There are a total of 8 tracks on the album. As far as house music goes, I would describe it as deep and experimental. Not your typical four four and a sample shit. The tracks differ in key and bpms and have plenty of atmosphere and strange organ doodles. The best track on there is an 11 minute number called "Dolphin Dance" or somehting (Im at work, so I cant provide definite titles ; ) After being dropped by his label, this is a great "comeback" of sorts. Experimental house. sasha

The only thing I know by Larry Heard is the CD Dance "2000 Part 2". It's interesting work. Are the other CD's like that? I've heard "Ice Castles" described as "stark'. What's it like? Major retailers don't seem to carry his work. thanks mediadrome --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've got DANCE 2000 PT01, which has some lush melodic stuff on it. Also check "A Definitive Mr Fingers Collection" which is a 'best of' collection - some really gorgeous shimmering deep house. Check out all the early Mr Fingers releases 'Can you feel it?' and 'Closer', and i guess his stuff with Robert OWens under the Finger Inc. moniker [if you like vocals, strange male emotional ones!] which are all early classic Chicago house tracks. But yeah, i went to see him spin in San Francisco, back in November, and damn was it terrible. I thought it might be kinda interested to hear what he was doing and playing, but it was terrible, no oomph, handbag house, just really weak and dissapointing. -t On Mon, 21 Jan 2002, Omar Hackett wrote:

I was interested in the 4th track on Dance 2000 part2. There's a certain -Big Band- influence on the track with the strings and brass. There also a -feel- to the CD - it reminds me of "happy jazz",.. like later George Benson, etc.. I'm NOT using that in the pejorative sense. I like George Bensons, work -- all of it. Is that what Heard's other work is like too. What is the -stark- "Ice castles" like? mediadrome --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

..rrrrring, rrrrrrring...Yello.......Hackett here: Yes, some of those tunes are quite nice......and many artists find it hard to keep up that flavor-ful edge......but he's got a history behind that's deep and thick with House.. Try that dawg-gone Chris Gray, to which Larry Heard produces, his shit is smoking!.....very progressive sound, still that House feel..... www.Deep4life.com Darand Land and some of those cats might refurbrish your spirits...... 1 more recommendation of course is that Bliming Tom Churchill! I really havent heard of cats getting that standard House feel-with soulfull lush sounds as he.....not the way I like it....but I am always open to suggestions........ ----- Original Message ----- From: Irene McC Sent: Monday, January 21, 2002 12:57 PM To: Mediadrome@aol.com; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] Larry Heard On 21 Jan 2002, at 8:51, Mediadrome@aol.com wrote:
