This is a reply from FSOL regarding Dom's DIY guide to the FSOL radio shows that was posted the other day. :: Alan M. Parry :: fluid@hyperreal.com :: <finger me for PGP key> [begin message] To: UK Dance <uk-dance@tqmcomms.co.uk> From: FSOL <fsol@fsol.demon.co.uk> Subject: FSOL BAD AIR Sorry to hear of your obvious disenchantment with F S O L It seems that now you have identified certain working techniques you can ignore everything else - ? You have however, thrown up an interesting point - can you access the content if the coating is familiar? Is this asthetic of presentation dying for you? Initially when we started the I S D N Project we had hoped to link radio stations worldwide. It soon became apparent this couldn't be done - technically and politically - (many stations incredibly don't have ISDN capability and resist networking).A traditional band will tour with the same songs and aesthetics for upwards of a year - we on the other hand try to script and compose new material directly through the radio medium. We don't deny that an aesthetic or syntax has evolved and that ideally every radio transmission should be approached from an entirely different viewpoint but this shouldn't mask the fact that last thursday's transmission contained 3 hr's of unheard material and live radio compositions from last weeks Amsterdam VPRO ISDN link-up. HOW QUICKLY SHOULD WE EVOLVE? VISUALS ON THE NET There seems to be some misunderstanding - did we miss something? The only time F S O L despatched graphics was during the U K Radio 1 transmission and this was on an individually served basis. We were and are not interested in setting up a permanent site on the net. Although we are interested in transitory sites of substance during broadcasts only , which is what we are developing now. H U M A N S The implications of our working philosophy frequently smack us in the face Radio is the stop-gap Do it once then move on? All we've become is the element of surprise? It's my mind that workss . . . ? If there is anything mechanical in your own working life then you too should change....or face your own hypocrisy We"re human . . ? I hurt. . . . !
