From:idm-owner@techno.Stanford.EDU From: MCEWENRK@vms1.academic-computing-service.birmingham.ac.uk Subject: FSOL This is a news report from todays NME (MAY 18) ; FSOL introduced a revolutionary new performance medium on Saturday night, when they played a set at their North London studio that was sent via modem (in digital form along a phone line), to be broadcast on Pete Tong`s Essential Mix show on Radio 1. A telephone number was also given over the air, allowing people to watch video graphics on their home computer system at the same time as the duo performed on the show. Internet, the growing network of computer users linked through telephone lines and modems, has over a million new users every month. This week FSOL embark on ther first ever `virtual tour` when they give similar performances on local radio stations around the country beginning with Sunderlamd Wear FM (Thursday, May 19), Bristol Galaxy FM (21), Stoke on Trent BBC Stoke (22), Radio Avalon (25), Manchester Piccadilly Radio (28) and BBC Radio Wales (June 7), all from their studio base. The band have withdrawn their single collaboration with Cocteau Twins singer Liz Fraser, but their new album `Lifeforms` is released through Virgin on May 23. The LP is accompanied by a film of the same name featuring stunning computer visuals, which will be released on video on June 16. Well, i wonder why they`ve withdrawn the single and was the nme tuned in on saturday or what? rob

The most important part is to have plenty of material to play with. The best stuff usually comes from TV, so video a few hours worth; Channel 4 re-runs of "Just For Laughs", films like "Escape From New York"... in fact almost anything will do. The more obscure the better, and anything with a drug reference is a real bonus. It is essential that you use plenty of vocal samples, so if there aren't enough on what you recorded then use the old standby - an answerphone message tape. Next put the voices through some effects equipment and do some time stretches and pitch shifts. Now you need two very important samples - water noises (waterfalls/babbling brooks) and goat bleats. Start with the water and then mix in the distorted voices, TV samples and goats. Stick in some occassional drum loops and soothing synth chords, sprinkle on the obligatory FSOL vocal samples and technical references; some cobblers about ISDN works well... and give out an Internet address (oops, I mean Internet access code ;) that you should never get any reply from. Repeat as necessary to fill three hours. If I sound a bit critical it's probably because I now have over 27 hours of FSOL radio sessions and they are all beginning to sound strangely similar !
