Monday, September 12th, 1994 at 7:14pm hi there - although the new delerium disc "semantic spaces" was addressed by both brother alphabet and drukman, i never felt like i got a coherent appraisal of it. i'm considering picking it up, but i wonder where it fits into the scheme that drukman proposed with "spheres", "syrophenikan", etc. should i be expecting something more ambient or more beat-driven, and how does it compare to their backcatalogue? any help would be appreciated. jwgrote@indiana.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------------- as long as the music is loud enough we won't hear the world falling apart

er, well, i haven't actually heard it yet, so any comments i may have made on it are purely speculative. /jon

I have it. I like it. Really gives me the same feel and results as OPUS III. It has remained one of the five discs in my player since purchase last week. To make it that long is usually a good sign, to me. I get too many new discs. If you like OPUS III, definately check it out. I can see the Opus III comparisions (especially on the 3 or 4 tracks with female vocals). I must say though that to me it sounds more like Enigma or Deep Forest, but more wicked (not as nice...make sense?). It has been panned constantly on alt.industrial but its really quite good. Got some great, catchy, tunes with nice beats. A few of the songs are really haunting... MC

I agree. I think there is a very definate Enigma feel to it. In fact, I have sold 4 copies in the store I manage simply by playing it, having someone come up and say "Is this a new Enigma?". Orbital sells well to "average" people from in-store play, too. I love it when the music is spread that much further into the sheltered American music world. Got this single the other day. Four mixes. Second one is the longest. He seems to have broken the tradition of blending all the mixes together on this one. It doesnt seem to be such an enthusiastic release. I recommend it, though. It is much more severe than the album mix. The last three tracks are anyway. I was disappointed that none of the tracks exceeded eights minutes, but this should be a good thing for all you spinners who want a quick mix. This is the FFRR/+8 release....so the european release (if there is one) might be different...i hope there is one and i hope it will be different (longer)... Jasonosaj.

Saturday, November 12th, 1994 at 4:16pm there was some mention of delerium's "semantic spaces" back in august or so, but it seemed to have gotten a few offhand comments like "the enigma crowd will enjoy this...", etc. i don't think that it got the scrutiny or respect that it deserves, so i just want to mention it again.... one person on this list said about this disc, "rhys fulber and bill leeb were the reason that i was given ears...". even though i'm not such a big fan of their other stuff (the new frontline assembly disc is godawful), this disc is positively one of the richest, smoothest, best-produced discs that i've ever heard. each of the songs is around 7 - 9 minutes long, and we have beautiful, spacey transitions between each one, creating a seamless 78 minute magic carpet ride. there are lots of ethnic samples which are intertwined with wavestation and 01/w sounds, and then heavy, dub-indica bass lines which roll along down below. lots of greens, golds, and blues.... all of the tracks are in the 90 - 110 bpm range, and i'd say that this is my choice for best marijuana soundtrack of the year. you can check out delerium's backcatalogue and hear some samples of "semantic spaces" by webbing up to http://www.wimsey.com/nettwerk/, but be forewearned - - just as front line assembly sounds quite different from delerium, the various delerium albums sound fairly different from each other as well... finally, the track that nettwerk used to showcase delerium on the web page is not necessarily that representative of the "semantic spaces" album in general... over and out jwgrote@indiana.edu --------------------- talk to me, talk to my machine
