since someone asked, i'll field the question... trainspotting is a hobby from the UK. people will stand on platforms or near railroad tracks to watch the trains go past, a pad and pen in hand, ready to write down the i.d. numbers of the trains that past. their goal is to see every train in existance. needless to say it's a very geeky hobby. when used in record collecting, it refers to a person who has to have every track or record by an artist, and stuff like that. if you are worried you are a trainspotter, here's a few simple questions. if you answer 'yes' to a lot of them, then you are a trainspotter. 1. do you create discogs of your favorite artists, spending hours and hours to make sure they are correct down to every last item? 2. do you frothe at the mouth when you find that limited edition 12" on purple crunchberry vinyl or what have you? 3. do you buy whole cd's or records just to have that one certain track? 4. do you repeatedly call the record labels you like begging for more info on releases? heh heh. anyway, there is no known cure. and i think almost everyone on this list is a trainspotter too. :) -w

Actually, I've quite often been known to buy comps just to get hold of a single track that's no longer available on 12". I don't regard it as a particularly trainspotterish thing to do..... (But maybe that's just a sign that I'm a trainspotter.... ;-) -cosmic

I was pleased and surprised to hear a little Telefon Tel Aviv being played as background music for "Marketplace" on NPR. -matT On Monday, January 12, 2004, at 07:46 AM, john tuffen wrote:

The little gnomes that play music on their transitions have good taste - more than once I've heard a good IDM or pop track played. It's like this subtle nod for any listeners "in the know".
