Subject: sorry: Shockwave Recordings
From: sines@sn.com (Todd Sines)
Well, to my surprise, there is ANOTHER label called Shockwave
Recordings (fax: +49 671 8408485) out of Germany, I suppose, and from what
I can make out of it in German (since I can't read it..) it is like a
Hard acid techno label.
There were a number of UR subdivisions, and special projects:
? Hard Wax: Minimal, acetic techno via Rob Noise & Mad Mike, I do so believe.
Rob Noise is Robert Hood, aka M-Plant, producer of the Protien Valve
and the classic Minimal Nation 2EP. Rumor is that Minimal Nation was
actually Waveform Transmission Vol.2, but it was unmarked when it was
released as such.
? X-101/2/3: Jeff Mills special albums, usually featuring vinyl that
runs backwards, etc...
? Shockwave: not what you think--this stuff usually ended up sounding like
ill-tempered house. There was one good track out of 5 which was a real ambient
houser.
? Red Planet: Not sure where these come from--I think Mad Mike has
something to do with it, but it sounds like the type of stuff Probe
and Rephlex would publish.
? Drexciya: Mad Mike, I believe, solo project since Jeff Mills left UR
back in 1992, then Rob Noise (Hood) left Mike's "army" in 1993. Vol.3
I believe was in association with Rephlex.
Most of this stuff was consolidated when Submerge was created, which was
developed in the idea that it would help unify Detroit by creating jobs
for talented producers of techno & house and allowing those people to
market, publish, and produce albums with a larger structure than just a
basement label.
I can get the current lineup of labels that have merged to create
Submerge, but I gather that quite a bit of it centers around UR.
