I believe Gil said he >was< going to air the tape, but I'm really surprised that he was given the tape and not told what it was. The 3D Headphone Tour is a rather unique promo campaign, but it >is< a promo campaign. I host a weekly techno/industrial/alternative/whatever show on WORT in Madison. I spoke personally with the Caroline Records radio rep about this project. He asked if we would be interested in airing such a tape, and how long we would want it to be (30/45/60 min.). I agreed (why wouldn't I?) to air an hour-long performance, and I had to tell them exactly when it would be aired. (July 25, 10pm) According to the rep, Caroline's retail/marketing division would buy a co-op ad in a local newspaper with one of the local CD stores, advertising the FSOL CD and mentioning the date and time of this special broadcast. So obviously, this is a well-orchestrated and absolutely wonderful campaign that benefits everyone from the label to the band to the DJs to the fans. It seems though, Gil, that in your case, your program director didn't do his/her job and tell you what this was all about. (Unless they actually told you to air the tape at that exact time.) If I were Caroline Records, I'd be pretty pissed that your station was sent a tape but wasn't fully cooperating with the program. Anyway, like Greg alluded to, my first thought (almost) upon learning of these exclusive performance tapes was that the Internet was going to be buzzing with people dubbing and trading these tapes. Watch for it! By the way, I hadn't heard how many of these tapes were actually being made. Can anyone substantiate Greg's claim that about 30 were being made? Al.

Well, now that you guys mention it, yes, my programming director said that each radio station will have a unique copy, but he didn't explain it as well as you did. It's not that my programming director does a bad job, infact, he's a company rep. for virgin, it's just that he really doesn't care too much about techno stuff, and he's just passing it along to me. The cool thing about him working for virgin is that i think he's gonna get me 6 copies of Lifeforms to give away on my show. Regardless, thanks for the info - i will pass it along to my listeners (that is if anyone listens:). (btw: if you're in the washington dc area, you can hear it thiscoming monday night from 9pm-12am on 88.1 MHz) -Gil

Yes, it is *quite* a campaign. Already I have seen *two* articles about it in _Jam_, Florida's totally lame but well read **Jam mostly favors Florida's hair-metal scene!!!** :) free mag. It was *very humorous* to me to see FSOL so well covered by this particular publication... Anyway, I'm going to try to tape the WMNF broadcast, which I *think* will be a full hour. Yes, I would be interested in trading... more on that later! On a similar note, I just saw in a recent Rolling Stone that they gave Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Vol. 2 a **** rating (this is very good for RS) and a pretty good review. I can also attest that FSOL sold *60* copies in the first week at Alternative Records here in Tampa. The audience for ambient-music *here* seems to be a combo of techno-kids and brainy (older) people who want New Age-ish music that challenges them rather than puts them to sleep... (or at least gives them cool dreams when it puts them to sleep) hmmmm....cool, methinks! ***************Greg******Dean******Schmitz*************** ************"I danced my way out of the womb,************ ************ I'll dance my way into the tomb...********** ************ Is it strange to dance so soon?"************ ************ from "Cosmic Dancer" by T.Rex.************** ***************Greg******Dean******Schmitz***************
