No, nothing to do with the Beatles dammit! I found this in rec.music.info -- it sounds sort of fun and you can help someone out with their thesis... Yet another way for the internet to waste your time at work :) I hope the wide and varied tastes of the idm list don't completely mess up the statistical analysis used in this guy's software... Maybe if enough people from around here join in and add some more techno/idm related stuff to their artist list, the automated recommedation service will suggest something other than Paul Simon to me :) Rob rec.music.info (moderated) #3945 (0 + 28 more) From: shard@media.mit.edu (Upendra Shardanand) Subject: INFO: A Music Recommendation Service Originator: dallin@CS.ColoState.EDU Date: Sat Jul 02 17:52:59 EDT 1994 Organization: MIT Media Lab (Music & Cognition) Followup-To: rec.music.misc Lines: 29 Introducing.. RINGO, a personal music recommendation service, being created at the MIT Media Lab. You tell Ringo what kinds of music groups you like. Then, you can query Ringo and ask for recommendations for artists you should check out, or should avoid. Or you can find out how mainstream your tastes are. Or retrieve other information, like reviews and top 20 charts. HOW RINGO WORKS: How does it work? Well, how do you do it ordinarily? You listen to songs that some D.J. plays, or you hear about stuff from your friends who have tastes similar to your own. That's how Ringo does it. People all over the internet tell Ringo about their listening tastes. It then finds people who are similar in their tastes to you. If they really like some artists that you haven't heard yet, Ringo will recommend them to you. HOW TO USE RINGO: Send an e-mail to ringo@media.mit.edu, with only the word 'join' in the body. It will then send you a list of 125 artists. You rate the artists that you are familiar with. Send it back. You will then receive a 'help' file describing how to use all the features of Ringo. The more users that use Ringo, the better Ringo's predictions. As time goes on and more people use it, you will find that the predictions become more accurate. So tell a friend. Thanks, Upendra

On Ringo: I'm actually tossing around some ideas in my head for a similar peer-review style system for this list when we move to hyperreal.com (the machine's arriving Friday, hopefully be set up Saturday). Doing it through a WWW interface seems most intelligent to me... Anyways, here's what I was thinking: In the "reviews" area, every artist has a page, (with a separate directory for various) and within each artist's page is a link to each of their albums or singles. Each of those links has maybe the cover art, maybe some samples, etc., plus a link to all the reviews ever written about the item. There will be a link to a fill-out form to review an album; an email gateway to both posting a review and seeing new reviews is also possible. Finally, each album/single can have associated with it a list of "seal of approval"s, which are basically marks that people leave on albums they like. I.e., I don't write many reviews even though I buy a lot of music, so I can go through and put a seal of approval on, say, "Diversions" by Orbital. If a lot of people do this, then we have a big database of music and who likes what - and I can go through and say "okay, I trust Pete Ashdown's taste in music, what has he put a seal of approval on?" and get a list of the stuff he's liked. We could optionally put a 1-10 rating on these seals, to improve the interface. The authenticity of these seals is protected on a password basis through HTTP, so it's not easy to spoof someone else's name. I'm working on a similar system for Wired, too. Setting up a system whereby poeple can leave a "preferences" file, and people reviewing an album can specify what other music it sounds like, sounds like a good thing too. This system could be expanded far beyond IDM, too. If you're interested in talking more about this, send me mail privately. But this is exactly the sort of thing I'd like to start doing. [For my part, I gave this a shot. It's pretty easy to use, and an interesting experiment if nothing else. Still, trust your friends, not your computers... But experiment. -es] [ There are vitually no idm artists in the database... -- lp ] Greets, Lawrence Pit ---

Well, there *are*... (Aphex Twin, Black Dog, Amorphous, etc.) and if ones you really like aren't there, ADD them. The artist list is expanding by the hundreds everyday but IDM artists only get mentioned if *we* do it. :) ***gladiolagreg*** *curiously, it's the IDM list where I first found out out RINGO!!!*

Actually, I orginally put up most of the IDM artists that are listed. It does take a little time, so I'm not qutie finished with all the ones I want to add. Defintely check out Ringo! All you really need to do is vote and be honest. I DID find out about RINGO from the IDM list. IF you don't want to bother adding names. LEt me know the artists you want added. The must a regular album out. In other words, if the are just on a single or compilation, they can't be listed. Also, you must list at least one album title with the name. It seems like some of the Industrial folks got there before we did and took somewhat of a stronghold although that is quicly diminsihing. LEt me know what artists you still want added and I can take care of the details and hassle for you.
