my oppinion of breakbeat (uk).... I try to approach this with an open mind, but i have not heard any hardcore tunes which i have liked. One thing is for sure: there are loads of crap B.beat records. Either I havent listened to the right ones yet, or there arent any right ones. I have dipped into some of the recent 'jungle' shows on KISS fm (london), and havent liked any on there either. What I have is the persistent use of dated chipmunk noises, and speeded up voices. Im still waiting to hear b.beat tunes that progress from simply laying the same b.beat pattern over a done-before bass burst with a few ravey noises chucked in. Tunes like this appear to me the least I of DM. At least your bastard hard AFX style stuff tends to be experimental in the respect that it hasnt been done hundreds of times b4 (although some artists are now pushing it!!). Another *fact* is that jungle/hardcore has a very bad reputation in my area. All my friends who DJ or listen to dance music express a marked dislike for it. The only artist that I have heard to use breakbeats to good effect is Aqua Fortis (on Sapho, = F, L and F). Here theyre used amid a wash of trippy ambience and go down a treat. anyone heard anything else like this?? Chris.
