I think a lot of the breakbeat artists go largely unsung by the masses
mainly because they don't have any (or many) albums out and largely
produce singles.. Anyway, I would agree there are a number of breakbeat
artists out there which are pretty good..I just recently was able to
hear the lucky spin backcatalogue thru my friend damian. Pretty cool
stuff..I think a lot of the popularity with orbital vs. breakbeat
artists has to do with the distribution elements going on, promotion,
and the fact that orbital's material goes largely to the consumer masses
where as many of the breakbeat artists goes to DJs.
NME and Melody Maker do largely give ambient/idm bands the most
coverage..although their was an article on Reinforced this week...
Also, breakbeat has the stigma of being 'not for everyone'.as a lot of
people I know who are into techno but absolutely abhor breakbeat..I
however like it I just wish some of the labels would put out up to date
comps... I hear Suburban Base just created an off-shoot label to do
just that.
I think the argument of "Orbital will elevate breakbeat" vs. "Orbital
doesn't know jack about breakbeat" vs. "Breakbeat sucks..why is Orbital
doing it?" is rather speculatory...and premature. A lot of trance
cuts..I'm hearing lately incorporate breaks in a few measures..but
aren't excactly breakbeat. Just wait for the album and write a review..
just my thoughts
